The Situation Today
You are invited to a special and important conversation Sunday, May 5th, in our fellowship hall, at 1pm. Some of you may have participated in one of our previous Joel’s Cafe, all-church conversations. These have been great opportunities to get to know each other better, and to come to some shared understanding of our mission and vision as a faith community. May 5th will be another of these Joel’s Cafe, all-church conversations, focused on our ministries with our un-housed neighbors.
The needs of our un-housed neighbors across Lane County have never been more intense. We will be creating a Joel’s Cafe page on our website, where you can learn more about the challenge of homelessness in our community.
Your church is often on the front lines of extending compassion to these most vulnerable of our neighbors, whether it is through our ministries to combat hunger, our service as the Egan youth site during hypothermia season, or through our many partnerships with other organizations in the community. Read more about our current posture of openness by clicking here.
However the current impact of these ministries on our building, staff and volunteers is unsustainable. Our operations will get some rest during the summer, and so this an important time to discern together the scope of these ministries in the fall and going forward.
You can find some reflections from our Keeper’s Cafe leadership by clicking here. This team is doing incredible work serving the un-housed and the hungry.
But our posture of openness is taking a toll on our volunteers, staff and building. You can find some observations from our church office administrator by clicking here. And you can review some samples of our building incident logs by clicking here.
Join us at 1pm on Sunday, May 5th for a time of listening, sharing, discerning and planning. Your leadership is eager to hear your questions and engage with your ideas. Watch your email and our website for more details, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Pastor Jessie.
Yours in Christ,
There are ways for us to continue to make a difference in the lives of our un-housed neighbors. The hope is that these options will help frame our conversation on Sunday, but there will be lots of opportunities for you to share your ideas for other ways we might move forward.
